Kumu Hula Patrick Makuakāne is a creative force in the dance world, known for innovative choreography that both stretches and respects the traditions of hula. Among the honors he has received are a Native Arts and Culture Foundation Fellowship in 2014 and a Hewlett & Gerbode Foundations Choreographer Commissioning Award in 2012. His San Francisco hālau, Nā Lei Hulu i ka Wēkiu, is home to a 40-person dance company and classes for more than 300 students. In October of 2016, best-selling author and journalist Constance Hale released, The Natives Are Restless: A San Francisco dance master takes hula into the 21st century, which tells the story of Patrick Makuakane and Na Lei Hulu through a stirring narrative, striking photographs and arresting moments from performances through the years.
